Welcome and thank you for joining us to celebrate our 10th anniversary!

col·lab·o·rate (kə-lāb’ə-rāt’) : 1. To work together

A film is the result of collaboration. A collaboration of many artistic disciplines as well as the talents of the broader community.

Ten years ago, there was a growing need for those who had made some chili for the crew, carried sand bags, composed music, given up the kitchen for a few days, or parked around the block to see and celebrate the films that were being made. The Nickel was born. Thanks to Roger Maunder our founder, his small, talented team, and NIFCO, it is this spirit that set the tone for the festival in 2001. Each of the 10 festivals has remained the collaboration of a board of hard working filmmakers, a short list of very talented staff, a long list of community supporters, a generous list of public partners and corporate sponsors, a gifted list of filmmakers from around the world, and you, a wonderful and diverse audience.

I’m very proud of our work together. It has allowed us to present a huge variety of films, to pay the filmmakers a screening fee, to bring in talent from all over the world for workshops, and to hire staff to increase our outreach throughout the year and throughout the province. I’m excited for the next ten years: the new ‘regional spotlight’, new platforms for films, new opportunities for presenting films and skills development outside of St. John’s, and all the ways that the Festival can become a greater part of a more sustainable world. Those who work hard together need to play hard together. Please enjoy this year’s celebration of independent collaboration with us.

Sincerely,

Baptiste Neis, President
