The Nickel Presents: Fast Film with Mike Fardy

Writing, shooting and editing a film in 48 hours? Sounds intimidating, but we’ll talk about how to set yourself up for success and help you discover the joy in low pressure high octane guerrilla filmmaking. Winner of CBC’s 2017 Short Film Face Off Mike Fardy (Moving On) thrives on the thrill of working fast and well. This is a day-long workshop where participants will shoot a short as a team using the techniques learned. A fun way to create a short film.

The Nickel Presents: Inside the Edit — A Master Class with Wiebke von Carolsfeld

Experienced editors will spend a day with editor Wiebke von Carolsfeld digging deeper into the personal process of editing and covering areas such as the director-editor relationship, and editing with acting performance, visual rhythm, sound and music.

Wiebke von Carolsfeld is a German-born, Montreal-based editor, writer and director. She trained on films by David Cronenberg and Atom Egoyan, then edited features such as October Gale (DGC nomination), Fugitive Pieces, Wrecked, Eisenstein (Genie Nomination), Five Senses and many more.

Wiebke made her directorial debut with Marion Bridge (starring Molly Parker and introducing Ellen Page). The film won Best First Canadian Feature at TIFF, Best Film at the Verona Film Festival, was included in Canada’s Top Ten, was a Best Direction nominee at the Director’s Guild of Canada. She wrote and directed the documentary Walk With Us as well as STAY, a Canadian/Irish co-production, starring Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) and Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall), which opened at TIFF and garnered the Best Director Award from the Emerge Film Festival. Her latest film The Saver has attracted many nominations and awards.

The Nickel Presents: Video Journalism 101 with Zach Goudie

THIS WORKSHOP HAS NOW MOVED TO FRIDAY, JUNE 16. CBC NL will host a one-day workshop focused on writing, shooting, and editing video journalism. Zach Goudie of CBC TV travels the country teaching his Visual Storytelling module. Up to 10 participants will get to learn directly from one of NL’s finest storytellers, using mobile technology to create their stories.

The Nickel Presents: Exploring CNA’s Animation Program with James Grace

Following a short animation screening, instructor James Grace from the Digital Animation program at CNA will cover the origins and methodology of what they do, how it’s different from other programs, and why it’s been so successful. If you have questions about the history, economics, labour market, and international accessibility of this work, this is the workshop for you.

An exciting opportunity for established and emerging filmmakers screening during the Nickel Festival to get to know other people in the industry and meet local film lovers. Though a moderator, filmmakers share their experiences- how they started, how they got help, and interesting stories about their work. All are welcome but pre-registration is required and space is limited to allow an intimate and manageable conversation to occur.

The Nickel Presents: How to YouTube with Matt Shea

With more than a million followers, YouTuber Matt Shea is one of the biggest local vloggers. He actually makes a living playing video games. You can learn more about how Matt does what he does in this workshop.

This vlogging workshop participants will set up and record an episode, and Matt will cover:

The Nickel Screenplay Series

Join us for a late afternoon coffee and short screening. Now entering its 13th year, three selected writers will go through the process of revising their scripts before working with a professional team to create a 1-minute trailer for their short film. Facilitator Charles Picco (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, TV Series and Feature Film) oversees the teams and moderates a Q&A about the projects following the debut of all three trailers.

The Nickel Presents: Film School in a Day — A Crash Course in DIY Filmmaking

An introductory workshop series that covers most of the DIY filmmaking bases, including six one-hour sessions from different experienced instructors. Perfects for the beginning and emerging filmmaker, or those who need a primer.
