DECONSTRUCTING CHERUB

Newfoundland & Labrador filmmaker Devin Shears will discuss his debut feature Cherub, a dialogue-free character study made for just $10,000 as his MFA thesis.

Devin Shears is a St. John's filmmaker currently living in Toronto who completed his MFA at York University under filmmaker John Greyson's supervision. His work has screened at Vancouver International Film Festival, Atlantic Film Festival, and Image+Nation.

DECONSTRUCTING THE BEAR INSIDE A WHALE

Director Kenneth J. Harvey will discuss The Bear Inside a Whale, his documentary following Haudenosaunee artist Stan Hill Jr. as he discusses his art and Indigenous heritage.

Kenneth J. Harvey is a two-time Canadian Screen Awards and Giller Prize nominee who has worked as filmmaker, journalist, photographer and international bestselling author. His films have aired on CBC, Documentary Channel and NTV, screening at over seventy festivals including Raindance, Hotdocs, and TIFF Film Circuit. He's won the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award, and Italy's Libro Del Mare, with books published in over fifteen countries.

DECONSTRUCTING SKEET

Award-winning director Nik Sexton will discuss Skeet, his black-and-white drama about reintegration and unlikely friendship in contemporary St. John's, filmed over seven years.

Nik Sexton is an award-winning writer/director whose first short How to Be Deadly was selected for TIFF 2012 and Cannes Short Film Corner, leading to a feature version that won Best Feature Film at the 2014 Canadian Comedy Awards. Skeet was one of only two Canadian features selected for TIFF's Industry Selects Program and won multiple awards including Best Cinematography at Atlantic Film Festival. He has created TV content for Discovery, VICE, Bell, and CBC.
