Youth P.O.V. Shorts + Astrid & Lily

This program of short films by, for and about young people explores their point of view from a wide array of backgrounds, showcasing films made by Newfoundland and Labrador students through the Nickel School Tour, the NL High School Film Festival, and a selection of filmmakers from around the world.

Following the shorts we will have a special presentation of an episode of Astrid & Lily — a sci-fi comedy shot right here in Newfoundland and Labrador — and a post-show Q&A.


Age Recommendation: 13-19. Astrid and Lilly is a comedy but contains some violence, sex humour, strong language and simulated gore.

Astrid & Lily: Episode 1 (Canada, 42 mins)

A special presentation of the hit sci-fi show that was shot right here in St. John's! High school is hard enough when you're different, but when outcast BFFs Astrid and Lilly accidentally crack open a portal to a terrifyingly quirky monster dimension, it gets a lot more complicated.


Nickel School Tour Shorts 2022

A brilliant collection of films made during the 2022 Nickel Online School Tour by students from across the province! In these workshops led by filmmaking mentors Kerry Gamberg, Lian Morrison and Justin Oakey, students were tasked to make first-time films on the topic of identity.


NL High School Film Festival Shorts

A selection of amazing films made by young people as part of this year’s inaugural Newfoundland and Labrador High School Film Festival.

All It Gives (Canada, 15 mins)

Showcasing one of Toronto's best up and coming hip-hop dancers, All It Gives follows the story of Kosi Eze, a Nigerian immigrant who moved to Canada when she was fourteen. From dancing in the hallways at her high school, to winning battles across the globe, Kosi's story of growth is a glowing example of how the power of hiphop can inspire, uplift and support anyone who needs it and wants to discover it.


Dance or Drive (USA, 13 mins)

A ten-year-old boy must choose between his two passions and make his own choice while being influenced by family, friends and teachers.


The Signing (Newfoundland & Labrador, 2 mins)

A young girl summons a creature from another realm with surprising consequences.


Revelinho (Netherlands, 12 mins)

Revelinho is a 12 year old boy who is a deep admirer of the traditional Dutch "songs of life". With the help of his two best friends, he gives it everything he's got to sing his parents back together.
