With Stephen Cadigan
How did this film come together?
Northerner: I've always wanted to make a super-hero film. I wanted to do NIFCO's Picture Start program and do something challenging. So I combined the two with Northerner!
Berries For Sale: Picking Berries: I had wanted to make a series of short films about resettlement and made the short film Berries For Sale as the first one. I asked Bell Media to let me make a Fibe TV show continuing the Berries short and Picking Berries was the first episode.
Did anything unexpected happen as you were making this film?
Northerner: We were supposed to film on a Monday and Tuesday on a rooftop. This was a super-hero film and the script was written for that location. On the Friday morning before that, I was told that a storm would be happening that Monday and I had to find an indoor location. Saturday evening we found a great one, Sunday I had to rewrite the script, then Monday it was lights, camera, action!
Berries For Sale: Picking Berries: The TV show faced outdoor challenges, like too much wind, a rare heat wave, too much noise, and too many ants! We experienced a power outage. Picking Berries is the first episode but we filmed it on the last day. Unexpectedly, things went smoothly!
What's the best filmmaking advice you've ever received?
To get your films made, you can’t just be a director. You also have to learn how to become a producer.
