Excited to share that we've been approved for a Community Board grant from @TELUS through the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation (@FriendlyFutureFoundation) for a new project developing online tools to give youth across the province, especially folks in rural and remote communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, access to better film education resources and film mentorship opportunities. Thank you to TELUS and the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation for backing this project! We're excited to get started. Stay tuned. #FriendlyFuture #GiveWhereWeLive #Philanthropy #ArtsEducationForAll 📸 by Heidi Atter
Lorraine is a documentary about the life of activist and political leader Lorraine Michael. The film explores Michael’s contribution to the province, but also about the Lebanese-Canadian community in Newfoundland. Directed by David Gosine and Allison Basha, it played at the Nickel Independent Film Festival. We spoke with Michael and Gosine after the screening. Michael is pushing for an official recognition and monument to the expropriation of part of New Gower Street in the 1960s which saw the destruction of many Lebanese owned businesses and homes. 🎥: @idontwanthenews
"Every dollar you take from somebody else is a little bit of freedom taken away from you." Mike Fardy @mikefardz on why, even after you get funding, the budgets don't have to get bigger and bigger. Don't be afraid to go back to the smaller projects —that's where you have control and can play around. From In Conversation: Growing Local On-Screen Comedy at the 2026 Nickel Independent Film Festival, with Matt Wright with Dana Puddicombe.
Dana Puddicombe on embracing failure and sticking to creative projects that you believe in. "I'd rather fail with something I believe in than try to make something that I think other people are going to like, not be able to stand up for it, and then have to deal with it not working." From In Conversation: Growing Local On-Screen Comedy at the 2026 Nickel Independent Film Festival, with Matt Wright with Mike Fardy.
Melanie Oates on the balanced feeling that comes from having several film projects at different stages of development. From the Strengthening Development panel at the 2026 Nickel Independent Film Festival, with Jamie Miller and Allison White.
Jamie Miller and Melanie Oates on remembering that the film is an experiment and doesn't define you ......... even when it totally feels that way. Also, therapy is good! From Strengthening Development at the 2026 Nickel Independent Film Festival, with Jamie Miller, Allison White and Melanie Oates.
